The axe is an entity added in the original Mari0 that is used in castle levels to break the bridge and end the level.

The axe looks like a battleaxe. They are 5 quads long and do not support sprite sheets in any version. In the level editor, all versions besides Alesan's Entities represent the axe as a

Use[]

The axe is a simple entity that replicates its function in the original Super Mario Bros. with no extra features. They do not have any right-click options or linking, but they should be used with bridge tiles and/or Bowser for full functionality.

They can be placed on any empty tile. They will block the screen from scrolling past them, and they will also block the player and portals. Touching it while in-game will trigger an end-of-level animation that destroys all bridge tiles present in the level (if there are any) and then drops Bowser under the level (unless he was already killed, or wasn't present to begin with).

Afterwards, the player will walk left until stopping at an NPC. In the first 7 worlds, it's Toad telling the player "Our princess is in another castle!" before the next level/world is loaded. In World 8 it is different, as Peach is present rather than Toad. Peach instructs the player to "Push button B to play as Steve", referring to the Minecraft cheat. She still says this in Mari0: SE, even though the cheat was removed. The mappack then ends and the main menu is loaded, even if there are levels beyond it.

In the latest SE beta (9), Toad will refer to the player by name, but Peach will always call them "Mario".
