Mario is a fictional character, created by Japanese game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. Serving as Nintendo's mascot and the protagonist of his series, Mario has appeared in over 200 video games since his creation. Pretty much everybody knows this guy.

In Super Mario Bros., which Mari0 is based on, Mario runs and jumps across and on enemies in 32 levels. In the end, Mario rescues the kidnapped Princess Peach from the antagonist, Bowser.
In Mari0, he is pretty much the same as in his source game, except for the Portal Gun he holds in his hands. While Mario is the only playable character in 1.6 and below, Custom Characters are available in Mari0: SE and Alesan's Entities. In SE, custom characters are identical to Mario aside from looks and experimental options to add flying characters. In Alesan's Entities, gameplay can be more varied.
The game itself does not provide a reason for him having the gun. However, some user-created mappacks do. It is also possible to remove the gun in post-1.6 versions, temporarily or fully.
